UoH Hosts Millet-Utopia: A Call for Sustainable Agriculture
Hyderabad: Highlighting the crucial role of millets in addressing food security and climate resilience issues, Prof. Appa Rao Podile, former vice chancellor of the University of Hyderabad, spoke of how these grains shaped his research and personal life.
“Millets are not just grains; they are an effective solution to food security, climate resilience and sustainable agriculture,” he said, addressing over 1,350 students from 50 schools at Millet-Utopia.
The event brought together students, teachers, and sustainability advocates under the theme ‘Millets for Food, Nutrition, Energy, and Environment.’
The event provided a platform to explore the multifaceted significance of millets through six engaging competitions — quiz, debate, drawing, skit, writing, and elocution.
Participants delved into topics like the biofuel potential of millets, impressing judges with their creativity and insights.
“This was more than a competition, it was an opportunity to learn and contribute to a sustainable future,” said a teacher, accompanying some students.
The discussions and competitions revolved around the pivotal role of millets in addressing global food security challenges, promoting healthy lifestyles, and fostering climate-resilient agricultural practices.
During the prize distribution ceremony, UoH Vice Chancellor Prof. B.J. Rao commended the students’ efforts, stating, “Your enthusiasm and ideas highlight the importance of youth in championing sustainable agriculture and healthy lifestyles. Millets are the key to building a better tomorrow.”
Now in its third edition, Millet-Utopia has established itself as a unique initiative that not only raises awareness but also instills a sense of responsibility and pride in future generations. Meanwhile, in keeping with the event’s theme, millet-based refreshments and lunch were served, offering participants a practical experience of their versatility and nutritional benefits.
“The food itself was a lesson in sustainability,” said Gita K, an excited participant, who expressed an eagerness to incorporate millets into her daily diet.
