UoH to host two-day folk fest
Hyderabad: The University of Hyderabad (UoH) is scheduled to host the Folk Fest 2025 on January 23 and 24, organised by the Centre for Folk Culture Studies in collaboration with government’s department of language and culture. The event is part of the golden jubilee celebrations of the School of Social Sciences.
The festival will feature an exhibition on Rarh folklore curated by Dr Md Intaz Ali from Netaji Subhash Open University. A Patachitra workshop by renowned artist Ranjit Chitrakar will showcase traditional art, while performances of Parai and Karagatam will bring folk traditions to life.
Paper presentations by Dr Justin Selvaraj of Madurai Kamaraj University and Dr Rajasekharan from the Central University of Karnataka will highlight academic insights into folk culture. Keli Ramachandran’s documentary on Chavittu Natakam, a Christian art form, will be screened, followed by cultural performances such as Tappatam and Bihu dance by artists from Madurai and Assam.
The second day will begin with paper presentations and scholar interactions featuring Dr Govinda Varma Raja and Dr Rethi Thampatty from Zamorin's Guruvayurappan College of Kozhikode, alongside Dr Intaz Ali and Prof Bhim Singh from UoH.
The afternoon will bring performances of Oggudolu by Dr. Oggu Ravi and troupe, Telangana folk songs by Dr Linga Srinivas and troupe, Perani dance by Varkala Vasumathi and team, and Malayalam folk songs by Ganga Sauvrav. The festival will conclude with performances of Baul songs by Purnendu Das from West Bengal and Hao folk songs by Guru Rewben Mashangva from Manipur.
