Wild Elephant Dies Due to Ill Health

Visakhapatanam: wild elephant of a herd that moved around Komarada, Jiyyammavalasa, and Garugbilli mandals of Parvatipuram Manyam district died due to health complications in Totapalli village on Tuesday.

The elephant "Venkata Lakshmi" displayed atypical behaviour, reduced food and water consumption, and decreased its activity levels. Personnel of the Elephant Monitoring Unit in the area promptly reported the behaviour to authorities.

Doctors of Visakhapatnam zoo arrived to treat the ailing elephant, representing the first instance of medical intervention for a wild elephant outside of captivity. Despite the medical treatment, the elephant did not survive.

Doctors led by Dr. Phanindra performed a post-mortem examination. It revealed toxaemia stemming from chronic trauma and infection in the forelimb.

Authorities cremated the elephant on Wednesday in the same field it died on Tuesday.
