Wildlife Board for Manjira Reservoir as a Ramsar Site

The meeting approved two road projects in Eturnagaram wildlife sanctuary, and diversion of forest land in Nalgonda and Nagarkurnool districts for the Dindi balancing reservoir.

Hyderabad: The State Board for Wildlife (SBWL) has called on the government to send proposals to include the Manjira reservoir as a Ramsar Convention wetland site. The proposal came up for discussion at the meeting of the board chaired by forest and environment minister Konda Surekha at the Nehru Zoological Park on Tuesday.

The meeting took note that Telangana did not have a single Ramsar site; by seeking this status, the state would have a water body designated as a wetland site of international importance. The proposal is likely to be discussed further at future board meetings.

Tuesday’s meeting also called on the government to declare the around 1,800-acre Yankathala grassland in Vikarabad district as a conservation reserve given the ecological importance of the site, and the biodiversity it holds in addition to it being the best example of natural grasslands of Deccan plateau.

The meeting approved two road projects in Eturnagaram wildlife sanctuary, and diversion of forest land in Nalgonda and Nagarkurnool districts for the Dindi balancing reservoir.
