Mumbai: Rohit Sharma would be gutted to miss out on the Test series against England.
Rohit, who is often criticised for failing to do justice to his talent, looked to have taken solid steps to prove that he is slowly but surely finding his feet in Test cricket by scoring three fifties in India's series win over New Zealand.
He was one of the standout performers in the Test series against the Kane Williamson led side; Rohit scored 238 runs in the series at an average of 79.33.
Rohit has been ruled out due to thigh injury suffered during the fifth ODI against New Zealand in Visakhapatnam.
The Mumbai cricketer is still not clear about the nature of his injury and says he may miss two to three months of cricket if he has to go for a surgery.
“We are not very clear about the nature of my injury. The BCCI medical team is in contact with the doctors. We have shared the scans with the doctors. We are waiting for doctors’ opinion on whether surgery is required or not,” said Rohit at the launch of Adidas Home Court store in Mumbai.
“Things will become clear in the coming two-three days. If I have to go under the knife, I won’t be able to play for two to three months.”
The Mumbai Indians captain congratulated his fellow teammate Hardik Pandya for earning his first ever Test call-up.
“I hope he gets his maiden Test cap against England. Hardik has got all the talent in the world, he bowls fast and he has the ability to come down the order and score big runs. So, I don’t see any reason why he can’t do the same for India.
“I wish him all the very best. I have seen him very closely and he stands a good chance to get selected for the first two Test matches,” said Rohit here on Friday.
The batsman is wary of the English challenge, but feels India have all the qualities and experience to continue their dominance in world cricket.
“They are a very good Test team. It will be important to play our natural game and not to worry about their strengths.
“There is a reason that we are the No. 1 Test team in the world today. Given all the conditions and the experience, the dominance of Indian cricket can continue till end of the Australia series.”
Meanwhile, BCCI has informed that Rohit will be visiting London next week and might undergo surgery after consulting a specialist.
"He will travel to London early next week for specialist consultation with a possibility to undergo surgery, as a result of which, he is expected to miss at least 10 to 12 weeks of cricket. The BCCI medical team will extend all support to Rohit Sharma, to regain full fitness and further contribute to Indian Cricket," said the BCCI statement.
