ICC World T20: Merciless Chris Gayle storm smashes England to bits
Mumbai: Chris Gayle scored an unbeaten ton to ensure West Indies continued their unbeaten record over England in ICC World Twenty20, with a comfortable six-wicket win in the Group 1 clash of the Super 10 round at Wankhede stadium here on Wednesday.
Gayle hit 11 sixes to surpass Brendon McCullum (91) for the record for most number of sixes (95) hit in T20Is. He reached his hundred in just 47 balls and crashed five boundaries as Windies chased down 183 with 11 balls to spare.
West Indies lost Johnson Charles on the second legal ball of the innings but Gayle warmed up with a boundary and six off Reece Topley in the second over. Marlon Samuels 37 (27b, 31 min, 8x4) took centrestage with some power-packed boundaries. Gayle didn’t get the strike for three overs as the Caribbean side marched to 55/1 in six overs.
Earlier, Joe Root smashed his way to 36-ball 48 to power England to 182/6. Alex Hales scored 28 at the top while Jos Butler (30) and skipper Eoin Morgan (27 n.o.) played their parts.
