IPL auction 2018: Complete list of players franchises can retain via RTM
Mumbai: With just a few days left for the Indian Premier League (IPL) players’ auction which will be held in Bengaluru on January 27 and 28, teams will engage in a fierce bidding war as they aim to rope in the best players.
The IPL Player retentions in early January saw a total of 18 players being retained by the eight franchises, including Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) who are making a comeback following a two-year spot-fixing ban.
While more than 1000 players had registered for the auctions, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has trimmed the list of players to 578 who will go under the hammer.
What is Right-to-Match (RTM) card?
The RTM was an option introduced by the IPL Governing Council that enables a franchise to retain their key players.
Teams are eligible to use a maximum on 3 RTM cards, but it also depends on the numbers of players they have acquired during the IPL Player Retention event.
Franchisees that have retained three players before the auction can use a maximum of two RTM cards while franchisees that have retained less than three players, can exercise their full quota for RTMs.
Note - A maximum of five players can be retained keeping the following things in mind - maximum three capped Indian players, maximum two uncapped Indian players, maximum two overseas players.
How does it work?
RTMs can be used by teams during the auction process. If a franchise wishes to acquire a player who was a part of their previous squad but another team has made their bid for him, the RTM enables a team to retain the player but at the cost of the price the other team quoted for that player.
