India vs Sri Lanka 3rd T20: Shreyas Iyer, Manish Pandey help hosts complete whitewash
Mumbai: India completed a clean sweep over Sri Lanka in the T20 series, as they beat the visitors by five wickets in the third match at the Wankhede Stadium here on Sunday.
Rohit Sharma played a cameo role of scoring 27 from 20 balls, which proved to be a crucial point in the match after India lost KL Rahul.
Coming into the match, India had made two changes, by leaving out Yuzvendra Chahal and Jasprit Bumrah and bringing in debutant Washington Sundar and Mohammed Siraj.
Earlier, Sri Lanka had lost the toss, as Rohit Sharma decided that they would bowl first. Nothing was going right for the Lankans, as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals.
The Indian bowlers did a good job, and dominated the Lankan batting innings as they did not give any room for improvement to the visitors.
As a result, they restricted the Lankans to 135-7 from 20 overs.
For the hosts, all bowlers contributed wickets. While Jaydev Unadkat and Hardik Pandya took two wickets each, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav and Mohammed Siraj took one wicket each.
In reply, the hosts lost KL Rahul early, and Shreyas Iyer was sent in to bat. Rohit, who scored a record-equalling century in the last match, too departed after a cameo.
Shreyas Iyer contributed 30 runs, but was later run out by Akila Dananjaya. Hardik Pandya was the batsman in at number four. However, Pandya departed early, as he could just manage to score four runs from as many balls.
Dinesh Karthik was the man in at number 6. However, the Pandey-Dinesh partnership was short-lived as the former departed for 32 runs. Following this wicket, it was MS Dhoni's time to finish the proceedings. In the end, it was that duo of Karthik and Dhoni which completed a whitewash against Sri Lanka in the T20s by winning the match by five wickets.
