ASR girl in blind cricket world championship

Visakhapatnam: A visually challenged girl from the tribal tracts of ASR district was part of the Indian Women Cricket team that won the championship defeating Australia, in Birmingham, UK, on Saturday.

The girl, Ravani, hails from Rangasingipadu village of Hukumpeta mandal in ASR district. Born to Gopalakrishna and Chittemma, Ravani studied at the government blind school in Visakhapatnam and later joined the same school in Hyderabad for her Intermediate.

All the villagers were elated when they heard that the Indian team comprising Ravani and others won the cricket championship. ASR district collector Sumit Kumar visited the family and spoke to her parents.

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the visually challenged Indian women’s cricket team on winning a gold medal at the IBSA World Games, saying the country beams with pride at their success.

Cricket for the Visually Challenged made its debut at the International Blind Sports Federation World Games in Birmingham this year. India restricted Australia for 114/8 in the allotted 20 overs and then chased down the revised target of 42 in 3.3 overs.
