Explained: What rule fetched India 5 extra runs in the match against USA

Hyderabad: Team India on Wednesday became the first team from the Group-A to qualify to the Super 8 after their win over the USA. Both the teams took on each other at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York.
It was a thrilling encounter as both teams locked horns to secure their berth in the Super 8's. In the low scoring match, the US set a 111 run target for the men-in-blues. India, chasing the target, fumbled initially after a few quick wickets, but managed to chase down the target with 10 balls to spare. Co-hosts USA had fought hard and made India sweat for the victory.
It was in the 16-over that the umpire had awarded team India with 5 extra runs. At 76/3 after 15 overs the extra runs helped the blues to reach 87 runs after 16 overs.
What's the rule?
The International Cricket Council (ICC), had inducted a permanent rule regarding the slow-over rate in March, 2024. It had announced that the rule would be in place during the T20 World Cup prior to the start of the tournament.
According to this rule, the teams will be given one minute between each over to settle and start the next over. However, the teams will be warned twice for missing the time slot.
If the rule is breached for the third time, 5 runs will be awarded to the batting time. After the third time, the fielding team will be penalised if it misses the time slot again, without any warnings.
