From Fifa to Wimbledon: This is how T20 World Cup transcended beyond cricket
Hyderabad: Rohit-led team India had made history after beating South Africa by 7 runs in the finals of T20 World Cup to become the first unbeaten team to lift the trophy on Saturday.
After their victory, Indian streets erupted with celebrations hailing captain Rohit Sharma, Coach Rahul Dravid, Star players Virat Kohli, Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, Arshadeep Singh and others.
This season's T20 World Cup for the first time had included 20 teams and was co-hosted by USA and West Indies. Team India had received praises from the cricket world, but interestingly official handles of various popular sports including fifa world cup, Wimbledon, UFC, NBA and others have also made special posts to mark India's achievement.
The fifa world cup's official handle on Instagram posted a college picture of Rohit Sharma's now famous walk to lift the trophy with that of Messi's iconic walk with the world cup. They captioned it "Rohit Sharma (handshake emoji) Lionel Messi".
Wimbledon had also reacted in a similar fashion and posted a college image of Rohit Sharma and Novak Djokovic tasting the soil after their victories. Happy fans flooded the comment section, where one wrote, "The taste of victory", while another commented "This is exactly what I recalled when I saw Rohit eating that piece of mud."
Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), the famous combat sport, had not officially posted on its handle but its players including Conor Mcgregor and Dricus Du Plesis have reacted to the Indian victory. Mcgregor had commented on Virat Kohli's Instagram post, where he wrote, "Legendary." While Du Plesis tweeted saying, "Well done India best catch in history! What a game boys keep the heads up @ProteasMenCSA". Another UFC fighter Merab Dvalishvili was also seen donning the Indian Jersey.
The National Basketball Association (NBA) also made a special post for team India. They have posted on their Instagram handle a video of Rohit Sharma along with nba finals trophy and wrote, "We're sure @nbafinalstrophy, just like us, is overjoyed to have you bring home the @icc #T20WorldCup trophy! #WhenCricketMeetsBall." In the video Rohit Sharma says "Oh Larry paaji ki haal chal."
Meanwhile, Indian players are stranded in Barbados owing to Hurricane Beryl. The grade 3 hurricane forced the Government to close the International airport and imposed a curfew in the Island city.
