I was on third day of periods, apologies for missing Olympic medal: Mirabai Chanu
Mirabai Chanu, the Indian weight-lifter who came fourth and missed her medal by an inch had said that she was on the third day of her periods during the Women's 49 kg weightlifting event at the Paris Olympics.
Mirabai had joined other Indian athletes like Lakshya Sen (Singles Badminton), Manu Bhaker (25 meter pistol event) and Arjun Babuta (Shooter) who also came fourth in their respective events.
In a video message, the former Olympic Silver medalist said, "I'm very happy with my performance today. Everyone knows something or the other happens with athletes. I have faced many things including injuries. Everyone knows what happened to me in my first Olympics and how I missed my medal. It happens to many players. But after that I became world champion, got silver for my country at the Tokyo olympics. I always give my best to get laurels and medals for India. I got many injuries. Everyone knows what happened to me in Asian games.it was not in my destiny. I also had a female problem (periods) . It is my third day."
"But I put in my 100 percent but it was not in my destiny," she added.
Assuring that she will deliver her best performance in future tournaments, she said "next time, I will give it my all to win a medal. I was not able to get the medal this time and for this I'd like to apologise to everyone, and I will give my best in all the upcoming tournaments."
Meanwhile, China's weight-lifter Hou Zhihui won the gold with a combined score of 206 kgs, while the bronze medalist scored 200 kgs and India lost the medal with a difference of just 1 kg as Mirabai lifted a combined total of 199 kgs.
