Glenmark 43rd junior national aquatic championship: Damini, Mayuri's big splash
Bengaluru: Damini K Gowda and Mayuri Lingaraj headlined the Karnataka show as the duo set new national marks in the Glenmark 43rd junior national aquatic championship at the Basavanagudi Aquatic Centre on Thursday. In Group-I 100M butterfly event, Damini showed her improvement as she bettered her last year’s mark of 1:04.78 seconds. The BAC trainee touched the pad in 1:04.78 seconds to take the gold ahead of Maharashtra’s Trisha Karkhanis (1:06.78s) and Suman D Patil of Goa (1:70.50s).
When asked about the record a confident Damini replied. “It was not a surprise. Yesterday in the 200M butterfly I couldn’t do the record because here in Bengaluru the weather is not constant. Today it was a bit sunny so that helped,” said the 17-year-old who took her personal tally to five golds in the championship. Damini had another one of her records rewritten, this time by Mayuri, in the Group I 100M butterfly. The 14-year-old broke a four-year-old record of 1:06.61 seconds by clocking 1:05.98 seconds, comfortably finishing ahead of silver medallist Anubhuthi Baruah (1:08.60s) of Assam and Tamil Nadu’s Pryanga Pugazharasu (1.09.28s).
Day Three’s other record went to Goa’s Xavier D’Souza who eclipsed Vedant Seth’s one-year mark of 27.65 seconds in the Group I 50M backstroke. D’Souza stopped the clock at 27.58 seconds in his gold medal winning effort. N Srihari from Karnataka claimed the silver with 28.45 seconds while Sandeep Huger bagged the bronze with 29.29 seconds on the clock. There were two more records in the boys 4x200M freestyle relay events with Maharashtra and Karnataka setting new benchmark in Group I and II respectively. The hosts continue to lead in the medals tally with 22 gold, 15 silver and 12 bronze, way ahead of Maharashtra who are second with 10 gold, 11 silver and nine bronze. Madhya Pradesh held on to their third spot with two gold, five silver and four bronze medals.
