Hyderabad: G. Soumya, captain of the Indian junior women’s football team, was felicitated for her rise to the top from humble beginnings, at the Sarojini Cricket and Tennis Academy ground in Hyderabad.

Soumya kicked her way up from Kunepally, a remote village of Renjal Mandal in Nizamabad district, to be part of the Indian team.

SCTA secretary G. Kiran Reddy, former national volleyball player and senior public relations manager in TSRTC, showered praises on the 18-year-old player and lauded her rise to the top.

“While in the U-16 side, Soumya recorded her highest goals for India,” Kiran said, adding, “in 2018, she was captain of the Indian football team and also played the U-17 BRICS (comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) tournament held in South Africa. Her performance on the field has taken her to different countries such as China, Nepal, Bhutan, Vietnam and Thailand.”

Soumya spoke of the rigorous training that helps her do well as she distributed prizes to budding sportspersons at the Sarojini Fitness and Tennis Academy.
