No stopping the Karnataka juggernaut

Karnataka's domestic supremacy continued unabated.

Bengaluru: Karnataka’s domestic supremacy continued unabated as they wrapped up their 25th consecutive title in the Glenmark junior National aquatic championship which concluded at the Basavanagudi Aquatic Centre on Saturday. The hosts finished with 37 gold, 22 silver and 23 bronze to take the overall championship with 607 points while Maharashtra came way behind in second with 406 points (17 gold, 18 silver and 15 bronze).

Karnataka’s Sanjay CJ and Maharashtra’s Neel Roy were adjudged individual champions in the boys Group II and I respectively while Mayuri Lingaraj and Damini K Gowda, both from Karnataka, earned the honours in the girls’ respective categories. On the final day of the proceedings, Sayani Ghosh set the lone national record in the 400M individual medley event in Group I.

The Bengal swimmer touched the pad in 5:14.04 seconds to rewrite Kanchi Desai’s five-year-old mark of 5:14.46 seconds en route to the gold. Karnataka’s Rhia Singh (5:29.20s) and Maharashtra’s Rayana Saldhana (5:31.61s) took the silver and bronze respectively. For Karnataka, M Rahul (800M FS, Group I), Sanjay 1500M FS, Group II), P Kushal 200M BR, Group II), Damini (100M FS, Group I), Harshitha Jayaram (200M BR, Group I) and Poojitha G Murthy (400M IM, Group II) all bagged individual gold medals to cap a dominant show by the state.
