Olympic Gold Medalist Imane Khelif Files Complaint for Online Harassment: Lawyer
Paris: Olympic gold medalist Imane Khelif has filed a legal complaint in France for the online harrasement, said her lawyer on Saturday.
"Having just won a gold medal at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, boxer Imane Khelif has decided to lead a new fight: that of justice, dignity and honor," said Nabil Boudi in a statement.
"Ms. Khelif contacted the firm, which filed a complaint yesterday for acts of aggravated cyber harassment with the anti-online hatred center of the Paris prosecutor's office," he added.
Boudi said that the criminal investigation will determine who initiated this "misogynistic, racist and sexist campaign" but will also have to focus on those who fueled this digital lynching.
"The unfair harassment suffered by the boxing champion will remain the biggest stain of these Olympic Games," he further added.
Last year, International Boxing Association had disqualified Algerian boxer Imane Khelif and Lin Yu-ting of Taiwan from the world championships and claimed that the two boxers had failed eligibility tests for women's competition.
However, Thomas Bach, president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), had backed boxers Imane Khelif and Lin Yu-ting's participation in the Paris Olympics 2024.
“We have two boxers who were born as women, who have been raised as women, who have a passport as a woman, and who have competed for many years as women,” he said.
