Chess in a different league now, says Harika
Hyderabad: Grandmaster Harika Dronavalli feels T20 cricket-style chess leagues are key to boosting the game of 64 squares in the country and the ongoing Global Chess League has made a good start in that direction.
“The League is drawing more people to chess and every team has garnered support, which will inspire many to take up the game. Like any other league, be it Indian Premier League or Pro-Kabbadi, it will take time to connect with fans. Eventually, the game will develop,” she told Deccan Chronicle on Thursday.
“There are leagues in many countries but not on this level. Ideally there should be just one league... there can be more teams to accommodate many players though,” the double Asian Games gold medallist added.
The players will surely benefit. “For the upcoming players it’s an amazing platform to gain experience in playing under pressure, which will prepare them for mainstream events,” Harika, who plays for Mumba Masters, said.
“The scoring system in the League too is interesting, far different from those at regular tournaments. This unique system is making people more excited to watch matches,” the three-time women’s World Championship bronze medallist added.
Harika also feels playing chess is a good career choice. “Chess is a really good option. Not many people know that we have many amazing tournaments which have good prize money. Financially, you would be very stable if you do well in the game. I am not talking of top games where players are paid high but if you compare it with many other sports its really good,” she said.
