Paris: In a disappointing turn of events for India at the Paris Olympics, veteran archer Deepika Kumari was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the women's individual event on Saturday. Kumari suffered a narrow 4-6 loss to Korea's Suhyeon Nam, concluding India's archery campaign at the Games.
Kumari had shown promise earlier in the day by defeating Germany's Michelle Kroppen 6-4 to secure her spot in the quarterfinals. However, despite her previous victory over the 19-year-old Nam in the semifinals of the Shanghai World Cup in April, Kumari was unable to replicate that success on the Olympic stage.
The match was tightly contested, with both archers tied at 4-4 after four sets. Nam's consistent performance in the final set secured her a place in the semifinals. Kumari, who has faced criticism for her inconsistent performances in the team event, struggled with scores of six and seven in the second and fourth sets.
The 30-year-old Indian archer started strong, scoring 28-26 in the first set to take an early lead. However, she faltered in the second set, scoring 10, 6, and 9, allowing Nam to level the score by winning the set 28-25. Kumari reclaimed the lead in the third set with a score of 29-28, but her inconsistent scoring in the fourth set (10, 7, 10) resulted in a 27-29 loss.
In the decisive fifth set, Kumari scored three consecutive nines, but it was not enough as Nam's scores of 10, 9, and 10 sealed the victory.
This defeat highlights the challenges faced by Kumari in maintaining consistency under pressure, a recurring issue that has affected her performance in key competitions. The loss marks the end of a valiant but ultimately unfulfilled campaign for India in archery at the Paris Olympics.
