Hyderabad: Rohit Sharma, who was long compared with legendary captains of world cricket including with Ricky Ponting and Dhoni had now earned a special place in history by becoming India's only third World Cup winning captain after Kapil Dev and MS Dhoni.
After the T20 World Cup victory, the debate around the best T20I captain has grown with netizens claiming Rohit as the best captain in the format. In this backdrop, let's look at some interesting statistics of Rohit Sharma as a T20I captain.
With 50 T20 international wins, Rohit Sharma holds the record for the highest number of T20I wins as captain. He surpassed Babar Azam and Ms Dhoni, who had 49 and 41 wins respectively.
Rohit Sharma also holds the record for the highest runs (1,905), most 100's, joint most 50's, Most sixes, most fours, highest strike rate as a captain (T20I). He is also the highest run-scorer for team India in the T20 World Cup 2024 which is also a record for the highest score in any T20 world cup tournament by an Indian captain.
Another Interesting stat is that Rohit Sharma has never lost a final of a T20 tournament (domestic or international). He has captained in 8 T20 finals from 2013 IPL to 2018 Nidahas Trophy to 2024 World Cup and emerged victorious in every match.
Rohit Sharma also holds the record for highest win percentage in ICC tournaments surpassing the great Ricky Ponting. Rohit Sharma has a winning percentage 84.6 followed by Ricky Ponting, Finch, Ganguly and Dhoni, who have 78.4, 75.0, 72.7 and 70.7 percentages respectively.
In addition, Rohit Sharma and Williamson are the only captains to lead their side to finals in all ICC World Cups (ODI, Test and T20) and Rohit is only the third Indian player along with Dhoni and Kohli to have 3 ICC trophies (As player and captain).
Rohit in his career as a captain has also defended many low scoring games some important one's are against Pakistan in the recently concluded T20 World Cup and also the IPL 2017 final.
However, Rohit Sharma, arguably the greatest T20I captain had announced his retirement from the format after the World Cup Victory on Saturday.
