T20 WC 2024: Former Cricketers Call New York Pitch Not Safe, Sub Standard

The United States is co-hosting the T20 World Cup 2024 and the pitches they have curated in New York have come under heavy scanner.

The players and commentators have been critical of the newly constructed Nassau County International Cricket Stadium at New York with many of them questioning its suitability for high-profile matches. The pitch has been called a sub-standard pitch.

During the two matches played on New York pitch, there were inconsistent bouncers which were dangerous for the batters. In the India-Ireland match, Rohit Sharma retired hurt after a ball unexpectedly rose and hit him on right biceps. Rishabh Pant experienced discomfort after a bowl unevenly bounced and hit his elbow.

Former cricketers Irfan Pathan and Michael Vaughan criticised the New York pitch. Irfan Pathan called the pitch "not safe for players," whereas Michael Vaughan called it "sub standard surface."

"Look, we definitely want to promote cricket in America, but this pitch is not safe for players. If we had a pitch like this in India, a match would never be played there again for a very long time. This pitch is definitely not good. I mean, we are talking about the World Cup here, not even a bilateral series," Irfan Pathan said on Star Sports.

Former England Captain Michael Vaughan wrote on X, "Trying to sell the game in the states is great .. love it .. but for players to have to play on this sub standard surface in New York is unacceptable .. You work so hard to make it to the WC then have to play on this .."
