PV Sindhu, Srikanth Kidambi spar as FNCC opens air-conditioned courts
Hyderabad: Top shuttlers P. V. Sindhu and Srikanth Kidambi treated badminton enthusiasts to a mixed fare as they crossed racquets in an exhibition match at the Film Nagar Culture Centre’s air-conditioned courts that were inaugurated by their mentor and national chief coach Pullela Gopichand on Monday evening.
The Commonwealth Games bound shuttlers were declared joint winners by chair umpire Vemuri Sudhakar in the friendly that was locked at 11-9, 7-11, 10-10 with Sindhu taking the first game.
FNCC president K. L. Narayana presented Srikanth and Sindhu with membership.
Speaking at the function, Sindhu said: “The preparations are going on well for the Commonwealth Games. We will be leaving for Gold Coast in five days and are expecting good results.”
“We don’t know the draw yet but the team is in good shape with everyone ready to give their best,” the Olympic silver medallist said.
Sindhu exercised caution though. “We can’t any player lightly — there are good ones from England in singles, doubles and mixed doubles. Anything can happen in a team event. We don’t have a particular number but are expecting a good number of medals,” she said.
Later, Gopi recalled his association with the FNCC and said he used to practice at the facility before embarking on his successful All-England Championship back in 2001.
Gopi, Sindhu and Srikanth also lauded the contribution of FNCC Sports Committee chairman V. Chamundeswarnath and said he has always been supportive of sportspersons by extending them help, be it financial or otherwise.
