Ultimate Table Tennis: Shaze Challengers beat RP-SG Mavericks, advance to semis
Mumbai: Shaze Challengers booked their place in the semifinal of the Ultimate Table Tennis tournament after a 15-12 win against RP-SG Mavericks in the last tie of the league stage.It was Achanta Sharath Kamal's(RP-SG Mavericks)11-7, 1-11, 11-7 win over Croatia's Andrej Gacina of Shaze Challengers which kicked off the series of matches. Sharath, who won the first game, just won a point in the second game as he came back to win the third game 11-7.
In the following match, Germany's Sabine Winter of RP-SG Mavericks defeated India's Mouma Das 11-8, 11-9, 8-11.
Another match which witnessed spectacular smashes was between Andrej Gacina and Stefan Fegerl of RP-SG Mavericks as Stefan came behind from 2-11 in the first game to beat Gacina 11-7, 11-8.
After the game, Gacina admitted that he should have scored more points.
“I think in the first game I played very well and he was not comfortable.I should have scored points by putting the ball on the right spot but he(Fegerl) played well and he won 2-1,” he said.
In the mixed doubles category, it was Sharath Kamal and Sofia Polcanova of Mavericks who beat Mouma Das and Li Ping of Challengers 11-7, 11-5, 9-11.
In a closely contested game, it was Soumyajit Ghosh of Shaze Challengers who prevailed over Stefan Fegerl in a score which read 9-11, 11-10, 11-8.
Falcons TTC will take on Maharashtra United while Shaze Challengers face Dabang Smashers in the semifinal match ups.
The semifinal ties will be played on Friday and Saturday. The tournament will conclude with the final here on Sunday.
