Wimbledon 2026 Sees Payout Clash, Historic Video Review Tech Updates

This year, the tournament starts with a lot of controversies from the payout disputes to the absence of the world number 2 and injury updates to unpack. For the first time in its 149-year history, the tournament has introduced video review technology.

Wimbledon is ready to make the English summers memorable and star-studded once again with its beautiful grass courts and the famous delicacy, strawberries and cream! The tournament is set to start on July 29th and will be followed by an action-packed 2-week show until July 12th in Southwest London, England.

This year, the tournament starts with a lot of controversies from the payout disputes to the absence of the world number 2 and injury updates to unpack.

For the first time in its 149-year history, the tournament has introduced video review technology.

This season is also a comeback season not only for the William sisters but also for the rising British star Emma Raducanu with her runner-up show in Queens.

The payout disputes have already been settled by the All England Lawn Tennis Club which announced a record prize money fund of 62 million dollars, 20% increase. Ladies and gentlemen’s singles champions and runners-up will receive 3.6 million dollars and 1.8 million dollars, respectively. The first round winners receive 80,000 dollars, a 21% increase. Although players welcomed the raise as a “genuine and significant step forward” , many players stated that this step does not resolve the other issues like contributions to a player's welfare fund, a revenue-sharing formula and a player council. Coco Gauff stated in an interview, “Its still a long way”.

The tournament draw is something to look forward to, especially in the absence of the two-time Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz from Spain. This leaves a huge window of opportunity for the defending champion Jannik Sinner and 7 time Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic. This is also a chance for other top seeds like Alexander Zverev, who recently capitalised on his absence from Roland Garros. The breaking of the monotony in the winner prediction in the recent slam has increased the excitement and uncertainty in the draw.

Video Review technology (VRT) allows players to challenge specific umpire judgement calls, such as double bounces or touching an opponent's racquet or body on the way past them. Players can review calls that end a point when a player stops play or immediately after a point concludes. Video review is active on centre court, No.1 court, Courts 2,3,12 and 18 for single matches.

Wimbledon enhanced fan and player experience by adding visual indicators for ELC calls to the scoreboard. While the major focus is on the comeback of Serena Williams and the William sisters playing doubles, the British fans are fully locked in on Emma Raducanu’s dream run in the HSBC Championships that took place in Queens.

“The new Emma” is the new trend in England where everyone is celebrating the Brit’s comeback on grass and a potential home grand slam with the new coach recreating the 2021 US Open dream run.
