T20 World Cup: Blues beat Bangla for second straight Super 8 win

North Sound (Antigua): India turned in another fine performance to beat Bangladesh and register a second successive Super 8 victory that puts them on the verge of the T20 World Cup semifinals.

The 50-run win at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium on Saturday was built on a high class half-century from Hardik Pandya and a disciplined bowling performances from left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav (3/19) and pacers Jasprit Bumrah (2/13) & Arshdeep Singh (2/30) that restricted their rivals to 146 for 8 in chase of India’s mammoth 196 for 5.

Earlier, a stop-start India put up a big total thanks to Hardik Pandya (50 in 27 balls) and his key partnerships of 53 for the fifth wicket with Shivam Dube (34 in 24) and an unbroken 35 for the sixth in the company of Axar Patel (3 not out).

The Mumbai Indians captain was full of confidence as he walked in with the team total reading 108 for 4 in the 12th over. He quickly got into his groove and began to unpack the big shots that fetched him three sixes and four boundaries and provided impetus to India’s innings — the Blues got 62 runs in the last five overs.

Dube played a crucial knock as well. The left-hander hung around before landing big blows. It was a case of six and out for him — the 30-year-old sent leg-spinner Rishad Hossain out of the ground and was bowled next ball as he tried to go for his fourth six.

It was a mixed start for India after being put into bat. Rohit Sharma (23) started confidently, middling the ball. He leapt out of the crease to send left-arm spinner Shakib Al Hasan into the stands behind long-on and followed that with a cut boundary as India raced about. However, the Indian captain perished trying to push the pace and miscued the next ball to be caught by Jaker Ali at extra cover. With that, Shakib became the first bowler to take 50 wickets in T20 World Cups.

That slowed down India’s scoring rate but the Blues did well to reach 53 for 1 at the end of Powerplay.

Tanzim Hasan then got Bangladesh back into the game with a double strike in the ninth over. Virat Kohli, who appeared set for a big score, got a little ahead of himself as he jumped out to smash the seamer only to miss the line and lose his stumps after making a 28-ball 37 that contained a boundary and three sixes.

Six and out it was for Suryakumar Yadav as well. Mr 360 thumped Tanzim out of the ground and then edged him to wicketkeeper Litton Das as he tried to run the next ball to the third man boundary.

At the halfway stage, India were 83 for 3. Soon after that, Pant switched gears and hit Mustafizur Rahman for 14 runs — two boundaries and a six — in the 11th over. He was going well against Rishad, hitting him for a six and a four in the next over before attempting an ambitious reverse sweep that looped straight to Tanzim at short third man. That brought Pandya and Dube together.
