For years, Bollywood stars have adhered to extreme diets, cutting out entire food groups, following juice cleanses, or consuming only protein-heavy meals to achieve a desired physique. However, a refreshing shift is now taking place in the industry.
Many new-age actors, including Triptii Dimri, Kartik Aaryan, Sonu Sood, and Bhumi Pednekar, are embracing home-cooked meals over restrictive dieting. Rather than following unsustainable meal plans, they are prioritizing wholesome, nutritious food, proving that balance, not deprivation, is the key to maintaining a toned and healthy body.
Nutritionists and fitness experts are increasingly supporting the notion that home-cooked meals are not only better for overall health but also more sustainable. According to Dr Richa Singh, a Mumbai- based nutritionist, home- cooked meals offer numerous advantages over processed foods or restrictive diets.
She explains, “Home-cooked meals are free from preservatives, hidden sugars, and excess salt. They are made with fresh ingredients, giving you the nutrition your body needs without unnecessary additives.”
A MAJOR SHIFT
This shift represents a broader movement away from extreme dieting in favour of a more sustainable approach to health. Actors are leading by example, showing that fitness isn’t about rigid, unsustainable restrictions, but about eating mindfully and focusing on a balanced, home- made diet. Home-cooked meals, often based on traditional Indian food, offer nourishment and comfort, helping them to main- tain their fitness more holistically.
From keto to intermittent fasting, many diet plans focus on restricting food intake to achieve a specific body type. These extreme measures, while effective in the short term, often come with long-term consequences, including nutrient deficiencies, low energy, and even unhealthy relationships with food.
In contrast, the trend that’s now gaining momentum in Bollywood focuses on home- cooked meals. Actors prefer homemade, wholesome food, which provides essential nutrients without the harsh restrictions of fad diets. Their approach is about maintaining balance — eating in a way that fuels the body, promotes health, and supports long-term fitness goals.
Many actors are embracing the benefits of home-cooked meals. Kartik Aaryan has shared that he prefers simple, nutritious meals like dal, roti, and sabzi, proving that a balanced plate can be just as effective as a fad diet. Similarly, Triptii Dimri focuses on mindful eating, prioritizing whole grains, vegetables, and lean proteins in her home- cooked meals. For her, it’s all about nourishing her body, not depriving it.
Sonu Sood, celebrated for his sculpted physique, also prefers home-cooked food, sticking to a diet rich in vegetables, proteins, and wholesome grains. Bhumi Pednekar, who has undergone major physical transformations for roles, advocates for traditional food and emphasizes a balanced approach to nutrition. She believes that eating fresh, home- cooked meals helps her maintain her health and fitness.
Other actors, like Deepika Padukone and Alia Bhatt, also follow this approach, enjoying home-cooked meals rich in vegetables, legumes, and whole grains. Alia Bhatt, in particular, enjoys fresh, seasonal food to stay energized and healthy. Ranbir Kapoor, who is known for his fitness transformation, also prefers traditional, home-cooked dishes like dal-chawal and simple curries.
HOME-COOKED NUTRITION
Fitness expert Aditya Mehra says that home-cooked food is not just a healthier option but also promotes a healthier mindset. “Extreme dieting can lead to stress and an unhealthy relationship with food. Eating home- cooked meals lets you enjoy what you’re eating, making it easier to stick to a balanced diet in the long run.”
Home-cooked meals allow individuals to have control over what goes into their food. From choosing fresh, local ingredients to controlling the amount of oil or sugar used, there is greater transparency and understanding of the food's nutritional content. This is something that diets focused on processed or packaged foods cannot offer.
Eating wholesome meals at home leads to improved digestion and energy levels, which are crucial for both physical and mental health.
TREND IS INSPIRING FANS
This shift is becoming more evident on social media, where fans and fitness enthusiasts are increasingly sharing pictures of their home-cooked meals. By following the example of their idols, people are learning to appreciate food that is not only delicious but also nourishing and sustaining.
Rather than chasing unrealistic body standards through restrictive diets, actors are promoting a more holistic approach to health — one that focuses on nourishment, balance, and enjoying the food we eat.
