Anjali Bags Title Role in Amrita Sher Gil Biopic
Amri is Mira Nair’s tribute to the pioneering artist
Anjali Sivaraman will be playing legendary painter Amrita Sher Gil in Mira Nair’s Amri. She was selected after an intensive global casting process, which included several newcomers as well as well-known names like Triptii Dimri, A Suitable Boy’s Tanya Maniktala and Wamiqa Gabbi. Mira Nair was impressed by 31-year-old Anjali’s raw intensity and striking resemblance to the painter, who is regarded as the pioneer of Indian modern art.
Anjali Sivaraman, the daughter of singer Chitra Iyer and Vinod Sivaraman, a veteran Indian Air Force pilot, started her career modelling for designers Tarun Tahiliani and Sabyasachi Mukherjee. She made her film debut in 2022 with Cobalt Blue, but it was the Netflix teen drama Class in 2023 which proved a turning point. Her portrayal of a rebellious and forthright heiress won her praise. In 2025, she starred in the Tamil coming of age film Bad Girl, produced by Vetrimaaran. Amri will be Anjali’s first big title.
