Ayushmann Steps into Salman’s Shoes as Prem

In a casting move that signals both nostalgia and transition, Ayushmann Khurrana will play Prem — a character immortalised by Salman Khan — in Sooraj Barjatya’s upcoming film Yeh Prem Mol Liya.

The film marks the return of Prem to the Rajshri universe after 12 years. Salman was last seen as the affable, idealistic hero in Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, opposite Sonam Kapoor. The journey began with Maine Pyaar Kiya, where a 24-year-old Salman first brought Prem to life, cementing the character as a pop culture touchstone.

For Ayushmann, taking on Prem is both an opportunity and a risk. “I have big shoes to fill. It’s challenging and exciting at the same time. I’m looking forward to working with Sooraj Sir; he’s one of the best,” he said.

The recasting, however, has sparked inevitable industry chatter. While some wonder if this signals the end of Salman’s long-standing association with the character, trade insiders view it as a natural evolution.

“Salman made Prem iconic, but he can’t keep revisiting the same space indefinitely. He and Sooraj are like family. There’s mutual understanding that it’s time to pass the baton. Ayushmann brings that boy-next-door charm the character demands,” says an industry expert.
