Art is Open to Interpretation, says Urvashi Rautela on Dabidi Dabidi Controversy
The controversy surrounding ‘Dabidi Dibidi’ has put the spotlight on ‘Daaku Maharaj’. Despite the backlash, Urvashi stands by the song, highlighting its entertainment value. Her response comes amidst severe trolling on social media, targeting the song's lyrics and visuals.
What’s your take on item songs or special numbers in movies?
They are a fascinating aspect of Indian cinema that serve multiple purposes culturally, commercially, and artistically. From a cinematic perspective, they often act as a dynamic tool to captivate audiences, adding energy, entertainment, and mass appeal to the narrative. They are not just standalone spectacles but can also function as key moments of storytelling, character development, or thematic expression, depending on how they are integrated into the film.
As an artist, I see these performances as unique creative challenges. They demand not only exceptional physicality and charisma, but also the ability to command the screen with presence and storytelling through dance and expression. A well-executed special number can transcend its immediate context, becoming a cultural phenomenon that resonates far beyond the film itself.
As it aligns with the film’s overall ethos and contributes meaningfully to the cinematic experience rather than being treated as a mere commercial insert. Lyrics, visuals, and choreography must be thoughtfully crafted to ensure they maintain dignity, cultural relevance, and artistic integrity.
Ultimately, I believe songs, when handled intelligently, can celebrate cinema’s power to unite art and entertainment, creating moments that stay with audiences for a lifetime.
