Deja Vu Drapes

Isha Ambani’s look at the 2026 Met Gala was undeniably vibrant but it bore a resemblance to the fabric used for Priyanka Chopra's silhouette worn at the NMACC opening, sparking instant comparisons

At first glance, Isha Ambani’s striking multi-coloured Met Gala pre-party ensemble turned heads — but for many fashion watchers, it also rang a bell. The silhouette, palette and overall concept bore a resemblance to a past look by Priyanka Chopra Jonas, raising questions — how did it miss the designer Manish Malhotra and the ace stylist Anahita Shroff?

Isha Ambani’s multi-coloured, panelled, body-hugging gown featuring 26 distinct borders representing India’s diverse regions, was conceived as a tribute to the country’s rich textile heritage, in line with the Gala’s theme of costume as art. “Every border carries its own language of craft — from zari work and gara to Kanjeevaram and Banarasi — coming together as one continuous narrative,” said Manish Malhotra.

However, sharp-eyed fashion watchers were quick to note its striking resemblance to Priyanka’s multi-coloured Banarasi silk drape at the inauguration of the NMACC in 2023. That look, was reimagined by Amit Aggarwal. It was crafted by pairing a 60-year-old vintage Banarasi brocade saree, using silver threads and a gold electroplating on khadi silk, structured with a jewel toned moulded body made of unique crafted material.

“Isha is definitely a fashion icon and with Swadesh becoming a flavour among international artists, this is a dress that celebrates India. But having said that, the concept is not unique since it’s been done before. I wish they had added a bit of drama, since that’s the Met memo. Yes, the colour palette is similar to what Priyanka wore, but Isha wore it better,” says a stylist.
