Love aligns east-west
The wedding mill is officially on fire, and this time, it’s radiant with Hollywood duo, Zendaya and Tom Holland. While family sources confirm the news of the pair’s engagement, jewellery sleuth Marion Fasel of @theadventurine revealed on Instagram that the ring in question appears to be an east-west cushion-cut engagement ring from London’s jewellery nonconformist, Jessica McCormack.
What is an east-west setting?
Instead of the typical vertical or “north-south” placement, the stone lies horizontally, creating a look that’s sleek, unexpected, and undemandingly spiffy.
For Disha Shah, founder and designer of DiAi Designs, the suaveness offers “endless opportunities to revise long stone cuts.” Shah notes that it creates a more flattering look, especially on shorter fingers, as it elongates the appearance of the hand.
The ambidexterity of east-west rings is another apotheosis. Fashion designer, Pooja Choudhary says, “Emerald cut diamond or oval gemstone, for instance, these types of base materials can look much more innovative in that tone.”
Redefining the unvarying
Zendaya’s ring may be breaking on the fashion shores now, but she’s in good company of grandees who wanted to remain sui generis.
Kate Beckinsale turned heads with her trio of horizontally-set wedding rings – a glistening tribute to herself, her ex-husband Len Wiseman, and her daughter Lily. “It’s my way of getting more ice if I have more kids,” she cheekily told PEOPLE. Minimalist yet undeniably entrancing, the stackable style sent the bridal world into a frenzy.
For her wedding to Ellen DeGeneres, Portia de Rossi wore a marquise diamond that was as unique as their love story. The stone was set east-west on a twisted band.
Talk about a showstopper and Catherine Zeta-Jones dazzled with her vintage-inspired, £335k engagement ring. The claim to fame was a ten-carat marquise diamond.
A jewel in the crown
Could Zendaya and Tom’s classic gemstone be the ultimate “it-ring”? “East-west rings are said to signify the journey of life and love, moving forward together through time. The horizontal placement of the stone implies stability, balance, and an uninterrupted forward trajectory which is a good choice for couples,” designer Raghavendra Rathore tells us.
