Never say no to fruits

Dr. K. Subba Reddy, Sr. Consultant and HOD, Department of Critical Care Medicine, Apollo Health City shares how home-cooked food, seasonal fruits and salads are ideal to maintain work-life balance while keeping him healthy

Dr K. Subba Reddy gets up early by 5 AM and hits the gym. Mostly he is either running on a treadmill or working out on a cross trainer before taking up strengthening exercises.

“Having a gym trainer is to help us in using gym equipment properly. I use the Whoop Whoop Fitness Band to monitor training,” he tells us.

The doctor adds that strain refers to the exertion one puts on one’s body. “Different monitors are available to give data on strain, and I try to monitor strain and maintain moderate to high levels,” Dr Reddy notes, adding that staying hydrated properly at the gym is inexcusable.

He elaborates that abdominal exercises are crucial to prevent abdominal fat. One of the ways to cut it down, he explains, is practising yoga at least 2 days in a week. “I try to be associated with fitness groups, either physically or virtually, so that I get regular updates and keep myself motivated.”

The doctor eats his meals with all his family members whenever it is possible as he believes, that way, he can get everyone to follow the same diet.

“My wife being a gynaecologistst; it is not possible to have lunch at home, but we eat breakfast and dinner together. We try to avoid food from outside; the best is to have home-cooked food, add seasonal fruits and salads to all our meals,” he shares.

Dr Reddy keeps drinking buttermilk during the day to avoid heavy meals. An apple, carrot and beetroot ice during breakfast are also adopted in his life after he saw chairman, Dr Pratap C. Reddy. Whenever Dr Subba isn’t taking enough fibre in his diet, he adds soluble fibre to his drinking water. “I regularly use supplemental nutrients; we all need micronutrients like vitamins, minerals, and trace elements to digest macronutrients like carbohydrates proteins, and fats,” he says.

The doctor also takes vitamin supplements regularly along with adult vaccines. He concludes, “Vaccinations are important to prevent infections; any fever will reduce gym productivity for a week.”
