‘Obsession’ Shows Bollywood the Way
Indie horror made for Rs 70 lakh grosses Rs 1,697 cr worldwide; RGV calls it a wake-up call

With no big stars and a meagre budget, the Hollywood film Obsession, directed by Curry Barker, is smashing box office records worldwide. Made at a reported budget of $750,000 — approximately Rs 70 lakh — the film has now earned over 300 times its cost, among the highest returns in world cinema history.
The indie horror sensation has grossed over $178.78 million globally — roughly Rs 1,697.51 crore. Against a production budget of just $750,000 to $1 million, it has clocked profit margins above 15,200% and is now Focus Features’ highest-grossing domestic release of all time.
Ram Gopal Varma says Obsession is a wake-up call for over-budgeted Bollywood and Telugu films. “They made the film at a fraction of the marketing budget of big Indian films. This, without stars, without a budget and without any publicity. How do we explain this? We don’t. Stale stories hoping to generate interest by showcasing so-called superstars won’t work.”
