Priceless Beauty Mask
While most people are familiar with rice as a staple food in their diets, few realize that it has been used in beauty routines for generations. Today, rice masks are making waves in the skincare world, and for good reason.
Rice has been a beauty secret for centuries, particularly in parts of Asia where it has been used to brighten and nourish the skin. In countries like Japan, China, and Korea, women have long used rice water and rice flour in their skincare rituals. The secret lies in the nutrients that rice contains—vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and antioxidants—which all play a key role in promoting healthy, youthful skin.
Rice water, the liquid left behind after soaking or boiling rice, has been especially prized for its ability to hydrate, tighten, and soothe the skin. Rice flour, when ground into a fine powder, has been used to exfoliate the skin gently and remove impurities.
Rice, Rice Baby!
Dr. Anuradha Jindal, a seasoned dermatologist, emphasizes that rice water is a game-changer for those with sensitive or acne-prone skin. She highlights its ability to calm irritation and fight inflammation, all while promoting a balanced, clear complexion. Dr. Jindal says, “Rice water is rich in antioxidants and has mild exfoliating properties, making it an excellent, gentle alternative for skin brightening.”
A 2018 study found that rice water gel, when used consistently for 28 days, increased hydration and reduced oiliness in the skin. The benefits don’t stop there—rice water also has anti-aging properties. It contains ferrulic and phytic acids, both of which are key players in exfoliating and brightening skin.
Beauty Benefits
In today’s fast-paced world, skincare trends come and go, but rice masks are making a comeback. Moreover, rice water is packed with phenolic compounds that inhibit the enzyme tyrosinase, which is responsible for melanin production (the pigment that darkens our skin). This action helps to brighten skin and prevent hyperpigmentation. Additionally, rice water improves skin elasticity by targeting elastase, an enzyme that contributes to wrinkles and skin ageing.
If you have dry skin, don’t worry—rice water can be beneficial for you, too. Fermented rice bran extract has been found to help people with conditions like eczema by soothing inflammation and keeping the skin hydrated. ‘’The cooked rice water also contains phenolic compounds. These phenolic compounds act against the tyrosinase enzyme, which is required for the synthesis of melanin, the dark-coloured pigment in our skin. They also improve our skin elasticity by acting against the elastase enzyme, which causes wrinkles and skin ageing.’’ says Jindal. ‘’It can be used in various forms, simply using rice water to wash your face or it can be used as a toner after face wash. You can store rice water in a spray bottle and spray it on your face after face wash.,’ suggests Dr Jindal.
Easy & Effective
Combining rice, honey, and yoghurt into one skincare mask brings together three naturally powerful ingredients, each offering distinct benefits that work in tandem to rejuvenate and restore the skin.
Honey has been revered for its healing properties since ancient times. Egyptians and Greeks used honey to treat wounds and skin ailments. Honey is packed with antioxidants, vitamins, and amino acids, making it a powerful tool in the fight against skin ageing. Its antibacterial properties are particularly useful for those dealing with acne. It helps reduce inflammation and redness while fighting bacteria that contribute to breakouts. "Honey helps in soothing irritated skin, while its anti-microbial action can support the healing of acne," says Dr Jindal.
Yogurt, a fermented dairy product, is packed with probiotics, prebiotics, and bioactive compounds that benefit both your gut and your skin. Jindal notes, “Yogurt is not only hydrating, but it also balances the skin's natural oils. Its lactic acid content provides mild exfoliation, making it ideal for those who want a brighter complexion without irritation.”
Rice is a powerful and multifaceted ingredient that offers impressive benefits for all skin types. It provides deep hydration and moisture, making it ideal for dry skin, leaving it soft, plump, and smooth without any greasy residue. ‘’It’s a safe and affordable option for those seeking natural remedies for acne, dry patches, or dull skin," Jindal adds.
