ChatGPT Becomes World’s Most Downloaded App in March

OpenAI’s ChatGPT became the world’s most downloaded app in March, dethroning usual top contenders Instagram and TikTok.

According to a report by Appfigures, ChatGPT saw 46 million downloads in March—13 million on iOS and 33 million on Android. This puts it slightly ahead of Instagram, which dropped to the No. 2 position with 46 million downloads as well (5 million on iOS, 41 million on Android), followed by TikTok in third place with 45 million downloads (8 million on iOS, 37 million on Android).

ChatGPT’s downloads rose 28 percent from February to March and were 148 percent higher when comparing Q1 2025 to Q1 2024, according to Appfigures.

This growth was fueled by recent upgrades, including GPT-4o image generation and the release of Ghibli-style AI art.

Instagram had previously held the No. 2 spot in both January and February this year across the Apple App Store and Google Play, while TikTok remained at No. 1, driven by user interest amid concerns over a potential ban in the United States.

The Meta-owned Instagram had consistently ranked as the No. 1 non-game app throughout 2024 across global app stores.

In total, the top 10 apps in March saw 339 million downloads, up from 299 million in February.
