On Wednesday, Aptech unveiled Creval – a first-of-its-kind generative AI-powered evaluation tool designed for visual arts.

Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Sandip Weling - Chief Business Officer Aptech, Kanishka Agiwal - Head – Service Lines, Public Sector, AWS India Private Limited shared their insights.

What was the idea behind Aptech venturing into this business?

A: We have around 350 centers and onboard 35,000–40,000 students annually, with over 50,000 active students at any time. A major challenge we faced in evaluating student projects was inconsistency and a lack of qualitative feedback, which impacted work quality. During final evaluations, this issue became more evident. To address this, we collaborated with AWS to develop Creval, ensuring consistent evaluation and detailed qualitative feedback for students.

How does Creval help creative professionals?

A: Creval provides meaningful feedback on creative work, enhancing improvement. Evaluations include a rating from 1 to 10 along with qualitative insights. Students can still opt for offline evaluations from trainers if preferred.

Can you elaborate on the strategic partnership with AWS and how it enhances Creval?

A: Our digital transformation strategy is based on three pillars: collaboration, security, and innovation. AWS, being a leader in security and cloud computing, became our preferred partner. We initially started with cloud migration and later identified key areas to address, including chatbot solutions for marketing and consumer interactions. Creval emerged from a set of 14 potential use cases we explored, prioritizing based on impact.

What is AI's role in education, and how is Aptech leveraging it?

A: AI in education enables personalization, a key focus for us. Our 350 centers serve diverse learners from various socio-economic backgrounds. Traditional teaching applies a one-size-fits-all approach, but AI allows tailored learning experiences. Personalization and accessibility are our top priorities, distinguishing Aptech in the industry.

What sets Creval apart from existing solutions?

A: While some AI models provide feedback, there is no structured solution for creative evaluation. Creval is unique in offering cohesive, structured feedback. Unlike existing models scattered across different platforms, Creval integrates multiple educational tools, including MCQs, instruction manuals, and chatbots, into a seamless mobile app. This one-stop solution covers education, enrollment, courses, and placements.

Are similar options available in the market?

A: Some models allow users to get AI-generated feedback, but they lack a unified platform. Creval stands out as an all-in-one service, embedding AWS technology for a comprehensive learning experience.

How much investment was required for Creval’s development?

A: Currently, we are running Creval on an AWS T3 application, and the costs can be estimated using AWS's pricing calculator.

What are the advertising and marketing plans for Creval?

A: Our existing student base of 50,000 makes internal marketing easy. The broader goal is expanding into the D2C model, targeting a wider audience—including students, parents, and professionals seeking upskilling—through platforms like Google Search, Meta (Facebook, Instagram), and immersive content such as podcasts and videos.

What are the long-term plans for Creval and its role in Aptech’s growth strategy?

A: Initially, we will integrate Creval into our existing brands, generating immediate revenue from our captive student base. Additionally, referrals contribute to 60% of our sales, making them a key focus. Beyond that, we aim to expand into the D2C market, enhancing accessibility and user engagement.
