Intel launches 10-core desktop processor

The Intel's Core i7-6950X is designed for gamers.

Intel has launched its first 10-core processor, the Intel Core i7-6950X Extreme Edition at the Computex 2016 event held in Taipei. The company already designs the 10-core Xeon processor for professional use, but the new 10-core processor is primarily aimed for home users.

The Intel Core i7-6950X Extreme Edition is built on the 14nm fabrication process, and is a part of the semi-tock release, neither in the Intel Tick or Tock cycle. Aimed for gamers, the 10-core desktop CPU runs at a 3GHz base clock. The CPU is unlocked but can be over-clocked to higher speeds. It also features a 3.5GHz Turbo Boost clock, which directs application towards highest-performing core.

In a statement, Intel quoted that the processor would be the perfect processor for virtual reality gaming.

As a part of the Intel’s 14nm Broadwell-E chip family, the Core i7-6950X is said to be 35 per cent faster in 3D rendering than the Intel Core i7-5960X of Haswell-E chip family.

Since, the top processors in the entire Intel’s series is priced at $1,723 (approximately Rs1,15,000). The Intel Core i7-6950X is expected to be available at a similar retail price.
