Make way for Paragon

The latest entry in the MOBA genre features PS4 and PC cross-play and has great production value.

Several developers have tried to get into the MOBA genre for the past few years, and almost all of them have failed. The reason for such failures range from genre fatigue to unimaginative gameplay; or maybe that audience is perfectly happy playing League of Legends, Dota 2 or even Smite all day; and does want to invest in another game of this type.

Developed by Epic Games, Paragon is the latest entry in this genre and features PS4 and PC cross-play. Paragon tries to distinguish itself by utilising systems usually found in card games. The item shop is basically a set of cards found in your deck. These cards are replacements for equipment as well as potions and wards. Each piece of equipment has three slots for your upgrade cards, which add bonuses to the base stats increased by that piece.

There is also no gold involved in Paragon. Players collect card xp in the form Amber, dropped by enemies. Collect enough of card xp and you get card level points. Each card has a value assigned to it; potions cost one whereas high level equipment and upgrades cost three. Thus players must carefully utilise their card level points and build their character. Deck building also plays a key part since you can only use cards you own. Once a card has been utilised it cannot be used again, although players can have multiple cards of the same name. These cards are collected by opening chests that be bought using real money. The impressive production values set Paragon apart, thanks to its eye catching values and incredible sound design. Hitting enemies and using your abilities both looks and sounds majestic, and it gels really well with the game’s setting. As Murdock’s Laser Beam just brushes past you or as Howitzer leaps into the air and unleashes a barrage of bombs; standard fights are made more memorable by the spectacle on display.

While Paragon is no doubt a straight up MOBA, there is enough difference here to justify a second glance and its great production value and presentation put it on par with if not above most major MOBAs. Paragon is now available for PC and PS4 and can be accessed by purchasing the founder’s pack. The game launches officially under the free-to-play model in summer.
