Google to educate Kasargod students on cyber security lessons
KOZHIKODE: All secondary school students in Kasargod will get lessons on cyber security straight from the horse’s mouth, Google. The district education office is joining hands with Google to provide awareness on child pornography, fishing, cyberbullying, sexting, internet addiction and other such traps. In the preliminary phase, two students and a teacher would be selected from each school and IT experts would train them. The three-member group will hand over the inputs they got to others in the school thereby reaching to all.
“Google will provide certificates and resource materials for students and bear the expenses. The preliminary programme is expected to be rolled out by month end,” said Kasaragod district collector K. Jeevan Babu. Authorities are exploring the integration student-centric cyber awareness programme of cyber police with this. “In the second phase, it would be expanded to upper primary level also,” added the collector. Deputy director of education (DDE) E.K. Suresh Kumar said more students were finding the cyber world safe for substance abuse.
“This would be fatal as rackets with inter-state connections would be preying on students. Hence, a thorough knowledge of the dos and don'ts is necessary,” he said. A senior cop said with Kasaragod having a large number of NRI population, children have access to all facilities at home including unchecked internet connectivity. “In most of the cases, fathers will be abroad, and mother cannot know much about the web which comes as handy for children,” he said.
