Social media platform TikTok launches campaign against plastic use
Short video format social media platform ‘Tiktok’ has launched a campaign called #IamLessPlastic encouraging its users to create awareness about plastic free lifestyles and the material’s impact on the environment. In a partnership with the development sector organization United Way India, users are encouraged to put videos with the hashtag sharing how, easily, one can make their neighbourhood clean and free of plastic.
TikTok launched this campaign to extend further support and mobilize more people to participate in the India Plog Run happening on October 2 across 50 cities. The event expects 250K+ participants to commemorate 5 years of the Swacchh Bharat Abhiyaan.
‘Plogging’ is a combination of jogging while picking up litter. It started as an organised activity in Sweden around 2016 and spread to other countries in 2018, following increased concern about plastic pollution. As a workout, it provides variation in body movements by adding bending, squatting and stretching to the main action of running, hiking, or walking.
Through short videos on the social media platform, users can share how they can make their neighbourhood clean and free of plastic, in the most easy and unique way, with the larger TikTok community. They are also to share their ‘plogging’ videos as a mark of their participation in the event.
