Hyderabad: In view of the growing abuse of technology using Deepfake techniques and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the digital world and also the sharp rise of cyber crimes using the same techniques, the Indian Army is focussing to counter them using the same Artificial Intelligence tools.
The Military College of Electronics and Mechanical Engineering (MCEME) of the Indian Army at Secunderabad has been working on AI-based models to detect Deepfakes. After close to a year’s strenuous efforts, Army engineers at the MCEME have successfully developed an AI-based Deepfake Detection Model, which has already been tested on around 1.40 lakh data sets.
Doctored videos and images with pictures of Army officials, public representatives or even celebrities, having provocative and fake content, can be easily identified with this model and the same can be used for preventing any further damage to public order.
According to MCEME officials, the AI model has already been tested on its campuses in the city and gave positive results. Now the Army has started proceeding for testing the model on a large scale at different field levels. Once the field testing is completed, these Deepfake detection devices could be installed at Army installations across the country, more particularly in their bases on the borders.
Based on the requirement, these devices could be supplied to other government departments to secure vital installations across the country. “This model will be very effective in access controls and preventing unauthorised entry into the secured premises. At MCEME, we are also working on developing various fake detection algorithms to serve different purposes,” they said.
