India can be a top scientific superpower: SERB secretary

The science, technology and innovation policy vision can be best executed through innovative, collaborative, and open science research

VIJAYAWADA: Secretary of Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB) Dr Sandeep Verma said that India is moving towards ‘technological self-reliance’ and will be among the top three scientific superpowers through its Science, Technology and Innovation Policy (STIP) 2020. Addressing students of SRM University-AP as part of the university distinguished lecture programme, Dr. Verma felt that the STIP vision can be best executed through innovative, collaborative, and open science research.

SRMUAP pro vice-chancellor Prof. D. Narayana Rao said that the 2020 policy will greatly enhance the scientific contributions of universities, institutions and national laboratories with the first two emerging as hubs for innovations.

Dr Verma called for a free flow of scientific and innovative ideas from people of all ages and across spectrums, including Indian Diaspora. He pointed out that gross spending of the country on R & D has increased three times in the last eight years. He wanted researchers to solve real-life problems.

Dr S Chandrasekhar, director, CSIR-IICT, Prof. V.S. Rao, vice-chancellor and Prof. Narayana Rao felicitated Dr Verma on the occasion.
