CES 2018: Vivo reveals World's first In-Screen fingerprint scanner smartphone
China’s Vivo had done it, or at least demonstrated it – the much anticipated In-Screen fingerprint scanner has finally been showcased at CES 2018. After numerous reports surfacing last year about Apple trying to embed their Touch-ID in the front, which they eventually trenched, Vivo had finally unveiled the much-hyped technology in a commercially viable form-factor. The company had launched the teaser video about the fingerprint scanner last year.
While all companies are going for 18:9 displays and oddly placing the fingerprint scanners on the back or completely ditching them, Vivo with the help of Synaptics Clear ID sensor has put the same in a conventional position – in the front and underneath the display. After seeing the The Verge's demonstration video of the fingerprint sensor, it very much feels like Apple’s first-gen Touch-ID sensor, which is certainly unconventional to the current generation accustomed to the fingerprint sensors. This can only be achieved on an OLED panel and not on an LCD panel since LCD’s have a backlight and cannot be supported.
Vivo’s working smartphone is yet to be produced and Synaptics Clear ID sensor has already begun their mass production.
