A Microsoft Android smartphone? Could be true pretty soon
A few years ago, if you didn’t like Android or iOS, you had the option to go for Microsoft’s Windows Phones. The platform, primarily backed by strong hardware from Nokia, did achieve some popularity, despite developers not finding favour with the mobile OS. The platform eventually collapsed, but Microsoft’s dream of being a significant contributor in the smartphone market has been kept alive by substantial releases on the software front for Android and iOS. However, Microsoft could even depend on Android for rolling out their first smartphone in the recent history, if the reports are to be believed.
According to a report from WindowsLatest, Microsoft is presently working on an Android smartphone. The smartphone is supposed to be Microsoft-branded and is aimed for an early 2019 release. The information comes from Microsoft store representatives who are pretty sure that a Microsoft device running Android will be a reality soon.
The authenticity of the report is suspicious, despite the store representatives being extremely sure about their leaked information. The last smartphone that came out of Microsoft’s factories was the Windows 10 Mobile-powered Lumia series of phones, after which Microsoft withdrew the Lumia project citing unsatisfactory sales. However, Microsoft has been actively developing apps and services for Android and iOS smartphones to keep their footprint in the segment. It has even ported popular desktop apps such as Word and Excel to these devices. The Redmond giant has been even selling Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S series smartphone from its store, pre-loaded with Microsoft apps.
Therefore, despite unbelievable claims, there’s a high chance that Microsoft could eventually end up launching an Android device, most possibly in the budget segment. Meanwhile, the rumoured Surface Phone could be positioned as the premium device meant for enterprise use only.
What do you think about this? Will the world warm up to an Android-powered Microsoft Phone?
