Women have smaller trouser pockets than men, claims research
When it comes to carrying smartphones or wallets, women usually prefer to carry them in their handbags instead of shoving them into pockets. While that is usually conceived as a way to ensure bulky slabs of glass and metal don’t spoil the appearance, the primary reason has been the lack of pockets big enough to hold anything useful, barring a folded sheet of paper. And now, science has gone ahead to document it.
According to a research from The Pudding, it has been found that women’s trousers usually feature smaller pockets than the ones meant to be worn by men. They haven’t just said it like that — the numbers are there to prove it. They took around 80 pairs of trousers, consisting of both men and women variants, and sat down with the measuring tape.
It was found that on an average, female trousers have pockets that are 48 per cent smaller and 6.5 per cent narrower than pockets on men’s trousers. That’s a lot of degradation that women’s trousers have to face. This results in reducing the ability to shove in smartphones or wallets as comfortably as compared to that of men’s.
The research states that only 40 per cent of women’s front pockets can completely fit one of the three leading smartphone brands — an iPhone X. The number goes for a Samsung’s Galaxy phone and a Google Pixel. Less than half of women’s front pockets can fit a wallet specifically designed to fit in front pockets. It’s also difficult to cram an average woman’s hand beyond the knuckles into the majority of women’s front pockets.
Do note that the difference in size has to be attributed to the larger size of men on an average. However, the report that states trousers for women also usually have tighter and skinny designs, which require smaller pockets — the fashion conscious will have a clearer understanding.
Whatever the reason may be, it’s now given women do have to compromise due to smaller pockets and as a result, their precious smartphones have to find solace in handbags or backpacks. Therefore, for all men, next time if a woman complains of smaller pockets as a reason for purchasing a new handbag, do understand the problem is genuine.
