Creating a WhatsApp group now requires a license
Mumbai: According to a recent circular by the government of Jammu and Kashmir, creating a WhatsApp group will now require a compulsory license. The move aims at keeping rumours to spread via social media apps like WhatsApp Messenger, that can create unrest in valley.
The new rule was issued after five people were killed in Handwara protest, and internet services were suspended for three days following the incidence.
The rule demands WhatsApp group administrators to get themselves registered with the authorities within ten days of the announcement of notice. Also, users in Jammu and Kashmir will now have to first apply for a license to start a WhatsApp news group. Registration will also mean that the administrators can be held responsible for all the content posted on these group chats.
