Sony unveils Xperia XZ3 with Android Pie, Curved OLED display

The XZ3 is powered by the Snapdragon 845 chipset paired with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage.

After loads of leaks and rumours, Sony has finally taken the wraps off its new flagship offering — Xperia XZ3. The successor to XZ2 retains the most of the internals but gets substantial upgrades to the aesthetics. Sony hasn’t disclosed the prices but the new model will be available alongside the XZ2, XZ2 Compact and XZ2 Premium.

With the XZ3, Sony leaves behind the LCD panel and goes for an OLED panel. The XZ3 features an 18:9 OLED display with QHD+ resolution. While the OLED panel would ensure better colours and contrasts, Sony has also given the XZ3 curved edges, similar to Samsung’s Galaxy S9. The curved edges aren’t just for aesthetics — Sony has added gesture and tap shortcuts on them to enhance ease-of-use. The display also brings with itself Sony’s tweakings such as TRILUMINOS and X-REALITY. The display also gets Gorilla Glass 5 protection.

Underneath, the XZ3 is built around Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 chipset accompanied with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. However, the XZ3 is the first smartphone to come with Android 9 Pie out-of-the-box, with Sony’s custom Xperia launcher on top.

For the optics, Sony has gone for a 19 MP, f/2.0, 25mm, 1/2.3", 1.22µm Motion Eye camera, accompanied with PDAF, laser AF, as well as a stacked memory solution with slow-motion videos of 960fps at 1080p resolution and real-time 4K HDR recording. There are some improvements added to the experience for the XZ3, through the latest iteration of the BIONZ processing algorithm.

The XZ3 has to make to do with a 3300mAh battery and also gets Qi standard wireless charging. It also gets a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor.
