Android updates have always found their own sweet time to find a home in older handsets across the world. It has usually become a tradition that a particular year’s Android update takes almost up to a year to find a reasonable amount of share in the world of smartphones. Despite Google trying its best to reduce this gap, the figures remain the same and there’s hardly any change, even for last month.
Google has released the latest Android distribution chart for October 2018 and figures still show the same result we have been experiencing from the last few years. The latest version of Android, called Pie, hasn’t even gained enough market share to carve a space for itself on the Android distribution chart. Despite Pie becoming rolled out be several third-party manufacturers early this year, the share is barely visible on the chart.
However, 2017’s Android Oreo, which got up to two versions in form 8.0 and 8.1, has earned a total of 21.5 per cent, compared to September’s 19.2 per cent. 2016’s Android Nougat still rules the chart with a total share of 28.2 per cent, but the figures have slightly been dropping for Android 7.1. Android 6.0 Marshmallow has also witnessed a slight drop in share, retaining its hold at 21.3 per cent. Android Lollipop and KitKat are presently stuck at 17.9 per cent and 7.6 per cent respectively.
Various manufacturers, who had participated in this year’s Android Beta Program have started rolling out Pie updates to existing devices while others are on the verge to roll out the final build. Project Treble was incorporated to make third-party manufacturers adopt the newer Android versions faster on their custom skins. However, the story is still similar to the pre-Oreo days, with months of delay for the latest Android version.
