OpenAI Launches New GPT-4.1 Models

OpenAI launched GPT-4.1, GPT-4.1 mini and GPT-4.1 nano, touting major improvements in coding, instruction following, and long-text comprehension

OpenAI has launched its new AI model, GPT-4.1, along with two smaller models —GPT-4.1 mini and GPT-4.1 nano—on Monday, touting major improvements in coding, instruction following, and long-text comprehension.

These models outperform GPT‑4o and GPT‑4o Mini across the board, according to OpenAI.
They support up to 1 million tokens of context and have refreshed knowledge up to June 2024, the ChatGPT maker said.
GPT‑4.1 scored 54.6% on SWE-bench, marking a 21.4% improvement over GPT‑4o and 26.6% over GPT‑4.5 in coding tasks. In instruction following and long-context understanding, GPT-4.1 also outperformed both models.
“Benchmarks are strong, but we focused on real-world utility, and developers seem very happy,” OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said in a post on X.
OpenAI noted that the GPT‑4.1 model family operates at a lower cost compared to GPT‑4.5. The company further stated that the GPT‑4.5 Preview will be turned off on July 14, 2025, as GPT‑4.1 offers improved or similar performance.
This announcement follows OpenAI’s earlier decision to replace the two-year-old GPT-4 with GPT-4o on April 30, 2025. According to a changelog posted by the company, GPT-4 will still remain available via the API.
OpenAI is also expected to launch additional AI models this week and in the coming months. Last week, The Verge reported that GPT-4.1, the full version of the o3 reasoning model, and the o4-mini model were all slated for release this week. With the launch of GPT-4.1, the company may also release the others shortly.
On April 4, CEO Sam Altman stated that GPT-5 will be released in “a few months,” with some reports suggesting a May release.
