WhatsApp Pay is Now Available To All Users in India
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has lifted the UPI user onboarding limit for WhatsApp Pay. This allows the Meta-owned WhatsApp Pay to extend UPI services to all users in India.
“National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has removed the UPI user onboarding limit for WhatsApp Pay (Third Party App Provider), with immediate effect. With this development, WhatsApp Pay can now extend UPI services to its entire user base in India,” NPCI said in a press release.
Earlier, WhatsApp was offering WhatsApp Pay services, but there was a limit on the number of users that WhatsApp could board, which the NPCI has removed now.
“Previously, NPCI had permitted WhatsApp Pay to expand its UPI user base in a phased manner. With this notification, NPCI is removing the limit restrictions on user onboarding on WhatsApp Pay. WhatsApp Pay shall continue to comply with all existing UPI guidelines and circulars applicable to existing TPAPs,” the press release added.
NPCI had imposed a limit on the number of users WhatsApp could onboard for its payment service, which capped Meta’s ability to onboard a maximum of 100 million users for WhatsApp Pay in 2022.
