SC asks Centre for plan on child feeding spaces in public

The Supreme Court of India has recently sought an action plan from the Centre regarding the provision of child feeding spaces in public places. The plea, filed by an NGO, advocates for dedicated feeding rooms and childcare spaces in public areas to ensure that mothers can nurse their children in a dignified and private environment. The petition emphasizes the constitutional right of mothers to nurse their children, highlighting that it is integral to their fundamental rights under India's Constitution, particularly the right to life and privacy.

The NGO pointed out that while there are provisions under labor laws for creating such facilities, their widespread implementation is lacking.

The court's notice to the Centre reflects the urgent need for comprehensive guidelines and infrastructure to support nursing mothers and young children in public spaces, especially as more women participate in the workforce and are frequently out in public spaces.

This legal intervention seeks to ensure that the dignity and privacy of mothers are maintained, while also promoting the nutritional rights of children.
